Heritage Garden Update

In May the Historical Society Heritage gardeners and the San Dieguito Garden Club volunteers, under the leadership of Laurel Mehl of Coral Tree Farms and Heirloom Seed Preservation, discovered some wonderful new wildlife in the heritage garden. A male California Scrub-jay visited us while we were planting some new warm season plants in the raised beds at the Old School House. While Laurel was creating a level spot for the donated compost bin (thank you for the bins Gigi Lopatirello!), she found an awesome legless creature. Turns out it’s a Skink!

 

We are so happy to see the benefits of the pollinator garden with numerous butterflies, including Monarchs.  The garden is turning an abandoned corner of the Pacific View Elementary School property into a beautiful, abundant, low water mecca for creatures and people.

 

Our compost bin is up-and-running with fresh dry branches at the bottom. This month we harvested the amazing Telephone Pole Peas that overwhelmed the raised bed under the sycamore trees and gave us an abundance of seeds for our seed bank.

 

We planted new blue lake pole beans, Italian green heirloom chard and Waltham butternut squash, and we continue to watch our heirloom pumpkin, bronze fennel and violeta purple pod bean grow and attract pollinators.

 

A great big THANK YOU to Historical Society Board Member Suzanne Spector for organizing the San Dieguito Garden Club volunteers, who are pitching in once a month to prepare soil, plant new seeds and weed.
