Membership

Our members come from many generations and walks of life across Encinitas and well beyond. They find deep pleasure in maintaining a landmark building and promoting the collection of historical materials that situate the Schoolhouse in larger contexts. This is not mere antiquarianism. Our members are dedicated to exploring the ongoing import of the sweep of events, of shifting ecologies and technologies, and of people who are today putting Encinitas on the map as an intriguing place with a future as vivid as its past.

Members are entitled to the following:

1) Invitations to the EHS annual meeting held each fall. The Board reports on the past year’s achievements and future plans and presents a guest speaker. The October 2025 Annual Meeting was video-recorded for the first time. Click here to view 2025 EHS annual meeting presentations and other videos.

2) Free research assistance, with free photocopies or scans of relevant materials, to a maximum of 100 pages per year. By 2027, members will also have free access to a digital research station in the Schoolhouse, through which they will be able to sift by keyword through the thousands of primary and secondary materials that we have scanned.

3) 10% above cost for all photos to which we have the rights, blown up to requested size.

4) 10% discount on all books, booklets, card sets, and prints for sale at the Schoolhouse.

5) At cost ($7.00), the newly-published book by our archivist, Hillel Schwartz: Research Guide to Local History, North County San Diego (2025).

6) Big Exchange: Through our participation in the San Diego Museum Council [hypertext], free admission during 2 weeks each May to 50+ San Diego museums. Throughout the year, our members will also gain free or reduced admission to various local museums by showing their EHS membership card.

7) Connections with thirty other historic houses, museums, archives and libraries in North County, through CINCH [hyperlink to page], the Council for Interpreting North County History, now coordinated by EHS Archivist Hillel Schwartz and President Carolyn Cope.

8) Member organizations may place free ads in our newsletters; their URLs appear on
every page of our website in our Friends list.
