WHAT  IS  GEOCACHING?

It’s the world’s largest treasure hunting game. Over 3,000,000 physical containers, called “geocaches,” are hidden around the world just waiting to be found. They come in all shapes and sizes but never require digging. What’s inside? A log for you to sign and, sometimes, a “trackable” item meant to be taken from one geocache to another, or an item to trade. Once you locate a geocache, sign the log, then put it back so others can find it. Our San Diego area has more than 6000 geocaches. See https://www.geocaching.com/play.

GEOCACHING  AT  THE  1883  SCHOOLHOUSE

In collaboration with the Encinitas Youth Commission, a permanent geocaching footprint operates around the Schoolhouse, and an official themed Adventure Lab has been launched for the site.  Thanks to Chet Kinzelberg, we have also begun to host geocacher meet-ups. Twice already in 2026, geocachers have gathered at the Schoolhouse, most recently at our Juneteenth event (June 19, 2026), during which a temporary Adventure Lab was also available.  The reviews have been encouraging, so we are planning other meet-ups in future.
